TREND REPORT: FEATHER THAT NEST!
Forget plain old nesting – now it’s hip to be home. Today’s home accessories take you way beyond cozy, into the domain of more choices than ever for personal expression, from country modern to ultra-urban edgy to global eclectic. Consumers are embracing bolder colorways, rich embellishments and exotic new treatments of traditional materials. Influences of other cultures are strong.
Fashion design is also an influence. The Fall fashion forecast is for sumptuous fabrics, richly mixed textures, matte metallics and modern twists on classic designs. Decide for yourself: is “masstige,” a marriage of mass and prestige, the emerging trend in home accessories? Among younger consumers, ‘cheap chic,’ customization, and mixing high-end and mass-market designs are how the “Now” generations decorate.
With so many exciting new looks to choose from, you need a guide… so start with some of these appealing new products. Click the images to learn more about each company and its offerings. |

Please be seated!
Actually, you’d have a hard time sitting in any of the Beylerian Collection of Small Chairs. These diminutive seats range from just 1/2 inch to 12 inches high. No, they’re not for Lilliputians – they’re made by manufacturers for promotion, and by artists letting their imagination roam free. More than 350 incredibly detailed miniature chairs from around the world, collected by enthusiast George Beylerian, are on view, through October 28, at MAD (Museum of Arts & Design), 40 West 53rd St.
Meet us at the “Apartment"
The Campbell Apartment, that is, on the ground floor in Grand Central Station. Considered one of the world’s best bars by those in the know, it was formerly the private office and salon of 1920's tycoon, John W. Campbell. Now restored to its original splendor, it’s been reborn as a chic cocktail lounge. Styled with Renaissance antiques, grand pianos and organs, it’s where “Gatsby glamour meets Capote cool.” But a word to the street-wise: Proper attire (no baseball caps, t-shirts, athletic shoes, etc.) is required. The Campbell Apartment at 15 Vanderbilt Avenue is open Monday-Saturday from 3pm to 1am, Sunday from 3pm to 11pm. (212) 953-0409.
Look it up!
Still thirsty? Check out a drink at the Hudson Library Bar, a handsome lounge that will remind you of an old English club, without the stuffiness. Deemed “a nocturnal wonderland” by The New York Observer, it’s a cozy spot where you can relax by the enormous fireplace, chat with friends, shoot billiards on a fabulous antique table (felted in posh purple), play computer games, or browse a book from the extensive collection that lines the walls. In the Library’s artful blend of old and new, classic leather sofas and wing chairs happily share space with state-of-the-art cyberdesks… and so will you. The Library Bar is in the Hudson Hotel at 356 West 58th Street. (212) 554-6303.
