Home Trends Identified for NYIGF’S “Open House” Project
Display & Seminar to Showcase Five Key Trend Themes
WHITE PLAINS, NY, April 27, 2012... Five key home design trends, ranging from nostalgic American motifs to modern print statements, will be showcased in a new “Open House” exhibit premiering at the summer 2012 New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®). These key themes also will be explored in a related seminar, presented by Sandow Media, Pantone and One Kings Lane, during the NYIGF.
“Open House is a collaboration of cross-industry trend-watchers to identify and showcase current – and coming – home trends,” said Christian Falkenberg, NYIGF director and GLM vice president. “Both the display and the seminar will offer NYIGF participants an invaluable preview of leading home products themes.”
The five trends, their inspirations and expressions, as identified by editors from Sandow Media’s Home Accents Today and Home Textiles Today, are:
American Vintage
Heavy on nostalgia, this look merges classic American motifs like denim, patchwork, numbers and flags as well as distressed finishes, salvaged materials and a hint of schoolroom style. Recycled materials are often used. This look is a continuation from the current industrial vintage trend, but with a fun, colorful approach.
The French Moderne Way
This look brings to life elegant French design. Minimalist and streamlined, it blends rich materials like shagreen and ebony with exotic Egyptian and Asian elements. The emergence of Baroque themes – especially human imagery found in tapestries and paintings of the era – are a companion look.
The Marrakesh Express
Ethnic looks from the entire North African region are merging and making an appearance. The result is flat weaves and aged color stories set against distressed finishes and richly-aged patina metal surfaces.
Linen Revival
Linen and linen-like fabrications are putting an emphasis on a “dry” hand. These include: rough linens that look hand-loomed; two-color tweeds; and animal patterns such as zebra and alligator wovens. Skins remain a design perennial, but this look introduces a seasonal twist.
Graphic Modern
This look is grounded by strong print statements often rendered in just one or two colors. Designs have “pop,” expressed through polka dots, “softened” geometrics which polish down hard edges, and florals on a grand scale.
All NYIGF exhibitors are invited to submit products for display in these categories. One Kings Lane’s merchandising team will review submissions, make selections and design and merchandise the display at NYIGF. The exhibit will be open during all NYIGF show hours, August 18-22, 2012, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Center.
In connection with the display, a seminar titled “Open House – What’s Hot in Home Design?” will explore trends influencing home products – from materials and color to commerce and branding. Warren Shoulberg of Sandow Media will moderate the panel discussion, including Susan Feldman, co-founder of One Kings Lane, and Laurie Pressman, Pantone Vice President Fashion, Home + Interiors. The session is scheduled for Sunday, August 19, from 8:30am – 9:30am, New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Tickets cost $20 advance/$25 onsite, and registration is available online at www.nyigf.com/programs.
As an extension of these onsite activities, select products from the “Open House” display will be sold in a One Kings Lane online flash sale during NYIGF, with proceeds benefitting Gift For Life, the home, gift and stationery industries’ sole charity partner. The 72-hour sale will begin on Sunday, August 19, on www.onekingslane.com.

Phase Three of NYIGF Strategic Reorganization Begins at Summer 2012 Market
Location Changes & New Event Launch Among Highlights
WHITE PLAINS, NY, March 30, 2012... The third phase of a major, multi-year strategic reorganization of the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®) will begin at the summer 2012 market, with repositioning of three product divisions – Baby & Child, Handmade® Global Design and New York’s Newest – to new locations within the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, the 2nd annual presentation of the Gourmet Housewares Show at NYIGF, and the introduction of Artisan Resource™, a new complementary tradeshow which will run concurrently with NYIGF.
“This series of divisional relocations is strategic and purposeful and will strengthen category adjacencies across NYIGF,” said Christian Falkenberg, NYIGF manager and GLM vice president. “The ultimate goal is creation of four distinct market collections which offer buyers a navigable and efficient shopping experience.”
“Focus Forward 2013,” a blueprint for NYIGF’s evolution to be the defining marketplace for fashion-forward and design-driven home, gift and lifestyle resources, began in summer 2010. At its completion, in summer 2013, NYIGF will be reorganized into four comprehensive market collections – NYIGF Home, NYIGF Lifestyle, NYIGF Handmade and NYIGF New. The overall plan incorporates introduction of new divisions and floor plan changes, several of which are necessitated by ongoing construction and renovation at the Javits Center.
This August, Handmade Global Design, a collection of 135 import resources with a focus on quality design, traditional craftsmanship and community building, moves to the Javits Center’s Level 4 Galleria and River Pavilion from Hall 1D. Handmade Global Design will run Saturday, August 18, through Tuesday, August 21, in the column-free renovated space, which offers generous amounts of natural light, in an expanded footprint.
Craft buyers will experience easier navigation between NYIGF’s two Handmade categories – Handmade Designer Maker in the Javits Center North and Handmade Global Design in the Galleria and River Pavilion. To promote the new location, plans include an opening day reception in the Galleria, enhanced signage and other onsite activities.
Baby & Child, a collection of 125 companies offering sophisticated and purpose-driven products for children 0-10 years, will move from the Javits Center’s Hall 1E into Hall 1D, which is adjacent to NYIGF’s General Gift and maximizes cross-marketing opportunities with relevant product. In line with this change, Baby & Child will run Sunday, August 19, through Wednesday, August 22.
New York’s Newest, a showcase of companies new to NYIGF and the New York Market, will relocate into the Javits Center from its former location at the Passenger Ship Terminal’s Pier 92. This cross-category collection of nearly 200 newcomers will run Saturday, August 18, through Tuesday, August 21, in the Javits Center’s Hall 1E.
An additional highlight of the summer 2012 market is the 2nd annual Gourmet Housewares Show® at NYIGF, with some 175 exhibitors offering high-end resources in cookware, bakeware, kitchen gadgets, kitchen textiles, bar and wine accessories, small electrics, specialty food, cookbooks, storage/containers, and picnic/barbecue accessories. With the positioning of the Gourmet Housewares Show® between NYIGF’s Accent on Design and Tabletop divisions, the New York Market will present an unprecedented number of adjacent design-led housewares to buyers. Since its inception in 1975, the Gourmet Housewares Show has provided a professional marketplace for the gourmet products and upscale housewares industries.
In addition, GLM has announced plans to launch Artisan Resource, a new semi-annual tradeshow, offering U.S.-based volume importers, direct import retailers and wholesalers the opportunity to meet with international artisanal producers, alongside NYIGF in summer 2012. The new event, which will debut Sunday, August 19, through Tuesday, August 21, at the Passenger Ship Terminal’s Pier 92, offers a production-sourcing venue for overseas artisan enterprises to showcase their products and production capabilities – at export terms – from their country of origin. Both participating suppliers and attendees will be carefully vetted to support viable export relationships and maintain appropriate channels of distribution.
Beyond exhibits, a full schedule of educational programming and after-hours special events will be offered for exhibitors and attendees. Seminars will address color, design and commerce trends, sustainability, social media, retail strategies and more. Networking events include the NYIGF-sponsored Retailer Excellence Awards and NYIGF’s Night on Broadway featuring specially-priced tickets to GHOST. Details and registration will be available online, after April 15, at www.nyigf.com/programs.
NYIGF also will highlight product innovation in four special displays – a new “Open House” trend showcase, the popular SustainAbility: design for a better world® display, Baby & Child Sneak Peek and Gourmet Housewares Show Best New Product display – and with presentation of awards in eight different categories.
NYIGF is the nation’s premier gift, home and lifestyle marketplace, with 2,800+ exhibiting companies featuring an extraordinary breadth and depth of design-driven home fashion products and complementary giftware. Its 400+ product categories and more than 100,000 product lines are showcased in ten carefully-categorized divisions.
The summer market runs Saturday, August 18, through Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers 92 and 94. Some 35,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 80 countries worldwide are expected. Information and registration is available online at www.nyigf.com.

WHITE PLAINS, NY, February 8, 2012… With the introduction of 500 new companies – within 2,800 total exhibitors – the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®) offered a wealth of new resources for buyers and attracted an increased number of individual retailers, as well as a robust gain in the number of stores attending market. The winter 2012 NYIGF edition ran January 28-February 2, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers 92 and 94.
The total winter 2012 NYIGF attendance of 35,000 represented retailers from all 50 states and 74 countries, with Canada, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, Australia and the United Kingdom as the top source of international visitors. Overall, individual buyer attendance grew almost 5% over winter 2011, with total copmany attendance increasing more significantly – by 7% over last winter.
"Growth in both individual and company attendance reflects an increasingly healthy economy and amplified the positive mood of the market," said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and GLM senior vice president. "Anecdotally, exhibitors reported a week of strong order writing, especially within home product categories, including textiles, tabletop, home furnishings and gourmet housewares."
Strong attendance during the winter edition of NYIGF was well-received by exhibitors. "This show went really well. I wasn't expecting this for January. It's been fabulous," said Diana Schimmel ofDos Riberas. Alden Smith of Aid to Artisans added, "We generally have a bigger show at the summer NYIGF than at the winter NYIGF, but this show is keeping pace. It's a wonderful sign."
The NYIGF "Driven By Design" campaign – which launched in the fall of 2011 -- promoted the show's overall design-driven, fashion-forward positioning. Many exhibitors noted the buyers' behaviors have evolved to a higher level of appreciation for design. "Buyers at NYIGF really respect the handmade movement," said David Atlas of Marquet. "It's been a great show so far." Caleb Siemon of United Glass reported, "We've noticed a demand for unique items, and our higher end products have been selling more."
The winter edition of NYIGF also incorporated five days of value-added programming, including educational sessions, industry social events, product awards, feature displays and buyer promotions. Some 30+ educational seminars – mainly presented by industry publications and associations – addressed color trends, sustainability, social media and retail strategies. Industry events included 2012 Housewares Design Awards Gala & Ceremony; Gift For Life's 20th Anniversary "Party for Life" Fundraiser; and the NYIGF's "Night on Broadway" featuring ROCK OF AGES.
Market activities also included the Best New Product Awards, as selected by leading trade editors, in NYIGF's Baby & Child and EX·TRACTS® divisions, as well as in At Home featuring Home Textiles as part of the Home Textiles Market Week Best New Product Awards. Superlative product design was also recognized with the Accent on Design® Awards and the Accent on Design Bloggers' Choice Awards, chosen by representatives of leading design blogs. Within NYIGF's SustainAbility: design for a better world® exhibit, the Eco Choice Awards rewarded the most innovative and environmentally responsible products. Award winners are detailed online at www.nyigf.com/TheShow/AwardsPromotionsDisplays.aspx.

Three Companies Receive Eco Choice Awards at NYIGF®
Retailers' Votes Determine Best "Green" Products
NEW YORK, NY, February 2, 2012… Three companies received Eco Choice Awards for presenting the most innovative and environmentally responsible gift, home, and lifestyle products at the winter 2012 New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®).
The fifth semi-annual Eco Choice Awards, co-sponsored by NYIGF and GREENRetailer magazine, were bestowed to "green" gift and home products in three categories – Most Innovative, Most Sensitive Use of Materials and Most Sellable. Retailers attending NYIGF voted to determine the winners from nearly 200 "green" products featured in NYIGF's SustainAbility: design for a better world® display.
"Today, 'green' products have to hit several notes to be commercially successful." said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and GLM senior vice president. "Retailers selected eco-friendly products that most-appealed to them in terms of design as well as saleability."
The winners of the winter 2012 Eco Choice Awards are:
Most Innovative – Petal Clutch by walleska ecochicc/ Fashionista Source (Dallas, TX)
This chic ladies handbag is made up from 100% recycled aluminum can tabs and crocheted by hand into a petal design. Through the principles of fair trade, the creative community has spread through nearly all twelve satellite cities outside of Brazil's capital, Brasilia, employing between 30 to 50 under-privileged artisan women. Wind powers the production of the product.
Most Sensitive Use of Materials – Recycled Paper Vase - Honeycomb by Made by Humans (Vancouver, Canada)
To create this vase, recycled paper was cut into strips, which were rolled into thin tubes. The tubes were sliced and glued on the exterior of a ceramic vase. A non-toxic dye was applied to give the vase its color, and a food safe, water repellant coating was applied.
Most Sellable – Life on Earth Tot Towers by Eeboo Corporation (New York, NY)
Made from paper and recycled greybeard which is easily broken down. It is printed with soy-based ink.
NYIGF's SustainAbility: design for a better world initiative was launched in 2007 to showcase global gift, home and lifestyle suppliers whose products or production processes are eco-friendly, as well as companies whose business practices are socially responsible, philanthropic or fair-trade oriented. A zero-tolerance policy was enacted in 2010 for any products with VOC; lead (for baby, children and food-related products); aniline dyes; formaldehyde and chlorine (for textiles); and PVC, without recommendation for use and disposal.
Now entering its fifth year, this initiative incorporates a juried exhibit of sustainable gift, home and lifestyle products, the Eco Choice Awards recognizing product innovation, and a new partnership with Green America to produce a seminar series addressing sustainability and socially-responsible business practices.
The sixth semi-annual Eco Choice Awards will take place at the summer 2012 NYIGF, Saturday, August 18, through Thursday, August 23, 2012, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers 92 and 94. Once again, winners will be selected by popular ballot from all products featured in NYIGF's SustainAbility: design for a better world exhibit.
NYIGF is the nation's premier gift, home and lifestyle marketplace, with 2,800+ exhibitors featuring an extraordinary breadth and depth of design-driven home fashion products and complementary giftware. Bloggers' Choice Awards Presented to Six Products Featured at Accent on Design®
NEW YORK, NY, February 1, 2012… "Bloggers' Choice Awards" were presented today to six products representing the most "urgent, odd and delightful design" at Accent on Design® at the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF®). Bloggers from noted design and trend-watching sites each selected one product from thousands shown by 200+ designers exhibiting at the winter 2012 gift, home and lifestyle marketplace.
"These bloggers are documenting the daily evolution of product design," said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and GLM senior vice president. "They have unique, experienced perspectives with which to identify superlative products within Accent on Design."
Six products were identified by eight participating bloggers as the "next big thing:"
Baggu laptop cases by Baggu (Brooklyn, NY)
"It's highly functional, affordable and comes in a variety of beautiful, bright colored canvases. The logo is subtle and the design, simple – just a rectangle and a half circle. They add a classic, preppy aesthetic to a high tech device," remarked Hollister Hovey, HollisterHovey.blogspot.com.
Belle Helmets by MODEL CITIZENS NYC (Jersey City, NJ)
"Danielle Baskin created her line of original hand-painted helmets as a way to express her personality and creativity. We all know that helmets are a safety requirement, but with Danielle's new line, they no longer have to be strictly utilitarian. The first painted helmet she created drew so many comments and compliments, she joined Model Citizens NYC, and is debuting her collection at NYIGF. We love that they're beautiful, expressive and fully functional safety helmets for riding and skateboarding," commented Kate Reynolds McLeod, DailyGrommet.com.
BANG! by bitplay, inc. (Taipei City, Taiwan)
"I saw a lot of playful designs and products that reminded me of my childhood. In particular, I loved BANG! by first-time NYIGF exhibitor bitplay. This toy gun combines fun and function. By pulling the trigger, a desk lamp illuminates. Shoot the light again and it turns off," said Danielle De Vita, Design-Calendar.com.
BANG! by bitplay, inc. (Taipei City, Taiwan)
"BANG! is an unexpected take on a table lamp with a gun you point and shoot at the lamp to turn it on and off. This whimsical interactive feature is part conversation piece, part gas. As you shoot the lamp, the shade tips back to let you know you've hit your mark. It takes a functional, essential object and injects playful humor into it. Its minimalist design has a pop art sensibility and would look right at home in an art collector's contemporary setting," added Marisa Marcantonio, stylebeat.blogspot.com.
Chick-a-Dee smoke detector by neo-utility (Brooklyn, NY)
"It's a surprisingly clever and innovative take on a very utilitarian – and important – object that has never seen the love of good visual / industrial design," according to Evan Orensten, Coolhunting.com.
Chick-a-Dee smoke detector by neo-utility (Brooklyn, NY)
"The traditional smoke detector gets a cheep and cheerful avian makeover with the Chick-a-Dee – a plastic bird perched on a branch and ready to emit an 85-decibel-alarm at the first sign of smoke. Designed by a Dutch firm with an eye to residential interiors, the Chick-a-Dee is available in several colors, and NYIGF marks its U.S. market debut," added Stephanie Murg, UnBeige.com.
Helen Lamp by Gambrel Workshop (Seattle, WA)
"It's hard to find new design that is both functional and delightful. This has both and I am pleased to discover a new designer," said Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, Apartment Therapy.com.
School Joke Chair by Alessandro Zambetti for Seletti North America Inc. (Brooklyn, NY)
"In the modern home versatility is key, especially when it comes to seating. The School Joke Chair by Alessandro Zambetti for Seletti addresses that issue without forgoing style and good design. It's simple to assemble without tools, is lightweight yet sturdy, and all the chair parts come off for easy storage. Another plus is the eco-friendly, recyclable packaging!" Dickson Wong, HuffingtonPost.com.
Accent on Design, the industry's leading resource for design-led merchandise, presents a dynamic juried collection of contemporary and innovative product lines from 200+ exhibitors across all categories. Accent on Design is one of 10 divisions presented semi-annually at the NYIGF.

Four Accent on Design® Exhibitors Awarded for Excellence
WHITE NEW YORK, NY, January 31, 2012… Four companies exhibiting in Accent on Design® at the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®) were presented yesterday with Accent on Design Awards recognizing excellence, innovation and creativity in product or booth design. Accent on Design runs through Thursday, February 2, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
"Our judges bring decades of design innovation and experience to the selection process," said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and GLM senior vice president. "They've identified the products and exhibitors which best showcase the incorporation of design in every step of production, from concept to manufacture and from marketing to merchandising."
Winter 2012 Accent on Design Awards were presented in three categories: Excellence in Product Design, Excellence in Booth Design and Lifetime Achievement.
Lifetime Achievement:
Eva Line, Eva Zeisel for KleinReid (Long Island City, NY) in recognition of the lifetime successes of Hungarian-born artist Eva Zeisel, who passed away in late December 2011 at age 105. Zeisel was known for her work with ceramics that were often abstractions of the natural world and human relationships. The Eva line, an instant classic since its introduction by KleinReid in 1999, features classic and sensual handmade porcelain vessels, serving ware and limited edition prints. www.kleinreid.com
Excellence in Product Design:
Karl Zahn for Areaware (Brooklyn, NY) for its Dovetail Animals, available in five styles – dog, llama, elephant, horse and crocodile. The three beautifully polished pieces – head, torso and tail – made from solid Beech wood converge with perfect dovetail joints to form the animal or can be mixed for a unique animal creation. www.areaware.com
Excellence in Product Design:
Sweet Bella, LLC (New York, NY) for its Woolfiller Kit which repairs holes and hides stains in woolen jumpers, cardigans, jackets and carpets in a simple, sustainable and satisfying solution for an age old problem. Major Reorganization of NYIGF Planned for 2013
Phased Changes Begin in Summer 2010 & Align With Javits Center Renovations
NEW YORK CITY, February 1, 2010… "Focus Forward NYIGF 2013," a strategic reorganization of the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®), comprising a series of considered changes to product categories and layout, was announced today by GLM. These changes, which will be implemented over the next three years, will position NYIGF as the defining marketplace for fashion-forward and design-driven home, gift and lifestyle resources.
This transformation will result in the creation of four comprehensive market collections – NYIGF Home, NYIGF Lifestyle, NYIGF Handmade and NYIGF New! – each with defined and carefully-edited product categories. NYIGF Home will encompass home furnishings, home textiles, decorative accessories, tabletop, gourmet housewares and Accent on Design; NYIGF Handmade will include designer-maker and global resources; NYIGF Lifestyle will present personal care and wellness, gift and stationery, fashion accessories and Baby + Child (a new juried category debuting in summer 2010); and NYIGF New! will feature New York's Newest. The changes are engineered to expand resources, spotlight new product and innovation to best advantage and create cross-marketing opportunities.
"This strategic reorganization will enhance NYIGF's position as the premier U.S. home, gift and lifestyle market and will strengthen show performance for buyers and exhibitors alike," said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and GLM senior vice president. "By improving category adjacencies, refining existing offerings and introducing new in-demand product categories, NYIGF will offer comprehensive and trend-forward product collections for home, lifestyle, and gift in a clear, navigable and energized layout." (NOTE: The NYIGF summer 2013 floor plan is available online at http://www.nyigf.com/Home/FocusForward2013/Summer2013Schematic.aspx).
Beginning in 2010, and culminating at the summer 2013 event, temporary and permanent NYIGF floor plan changes will align with planned construction and renovation of New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center – the home of NYIGF since 1986. The transformation of the Javits Center will include installation of a new green roof – the largest of its kind in New York City; construction of the new Javits Center North which extends the building North to 40th Street; and major renovations to building systems, skylights and roof. (NOTE: Renderings of the Javits Center North are available online at http://www.nyigf.com/Home/FocusForward2013/Summer2013Schematic.aspx).
Initial changes, in effect as of summer 2010, will include: the introduction of a new juried category, Baby + Child, for upscale baby and children's products; reorganization of the existing Handmade division to more effectively define and showcase designer-maker craft and global resources categories; and the reintroduction of New York's Newest at Pier 92.
Within its new Baby + Child category, NYIGF will present a comprehensive collection of well-designed, sophisticated and purpose-driven products for babies, toddlers and kids (through age 10) and their families. The range of featured products will include arts & crafts, books, music, toys, games, puzzles, dolls and plush, gear (diaper bags, stroller accessories and feeding accessories), wearables and accessories, layette, bedding accessories & blankets. Ultimately, Baby + Child will feature some 200 companies on Level One of the convention center.
Beginning in summer 2010, NYIGF's Handmade will present two distinct categories of handcrafted merchandise: Designer Maker and Global Resources. NYIGF Handmade: Designer Maker will include some 360 designer-makers from across the United States and around the world, and Handmade: Global Resources will include some 200 imported resources featuring traditional designs and craftsmanship and Fair Trade production from around the world.
New York's Newest, showcasing companies new to the New York market, will be reintroduced to NYIGF in summer 2010. The division, which will feature some 200 newcomers to the Fair, will be housed at Pier 92.
NYIGF is the nation's premier gift, home and lifestyle marketplace, with 2,700 exhibiting companies featuring an extraordinary breadth and depth of design-driven home fashion products and complementary giftware. Some 31,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 85 countries worldwide are expected.
In summer 2010, NYIGF runs Saturday, August 14, through Thursday, August 19, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers 92 and 94. Information and registration is available online at www.nyigf.com.
